Politics is the wrong place for cosmic theories on truth, the universe and the nature of man. The right level of abstraction is do you want your garbage picked up on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Not sure how long it's going to take for most people to figure this out.

I think recognition of your "right level of abstraction" increases in perceived agency, which is why right now it is "who do I hate?"

Even when politics seems to be functioning at an abstract ideological level, it gets translated into something much simpler. Team A or team B.

A Recipe for Negative Partisanship. Mix: 1. A shift towards global decision-making (federal); 2. Need for a fast-and-frugal judgment heuristic; 3. Ideological sorting into parties; and, 4. Media as theatre. Let it simmer for a generation.
