I can't remember the source or exact quote but I one read something like, "yes C++ is big but if you think about how many simultaneous constraints it had to meet, it's an impressive engineering feat," and I can't stop laughing about that premise.

"Well that's unfair. Everyone knows that your team needs to select and enforce a constrained subset of C++ when implementing and designing a project." Easy!

For the subset languages I use, which is statistical and mathematical computing languages, that’s been my perception too. They are getting more similar.

Maybe I romanticize it a bit too much, but I'd prefer lots of only weakly-overlapping contexts. Otherwise, it feels like we're all growing ideas in a monoculture.

I use C# and Python and they both have been borrowing the best concepts from each other for years. Definitely true there.
