1/ So, I did a little personal experiment over the last month. I, 1. Started logging my whereabouts using PolarSteps, and; 2. Left it on.https://www.polarsteps.com/

2/ I was mostly inspired by this Walter Lippmann quote that I came across again while doing my lit review:https://twitter.com/microjudgments/status/1089910173873856513 …

3/ I'm not sure why, but I always read "moves in a small circle" as "traverses small, infinite loops." And, I wanted to see my geographical ones. Experimentally, it did not disappoint; personally, it did.

4/ In a world full of possibilities -- even locally -- I followed painfully boring and repetitive paths. But, again, these were spatial paths made obvious by a GPS app... ...just think of the abstract, intellectual ruts that I can't even perceive.

🤓! I am obsessive about intellectual ruts and fashions. I'm physically mostly-boring, wandering around mostly the same old ground – but I try to be the opposite intellectuallyhttps://twitter.com/visakanv/status/912145510441484289 …

Oh, also -- my fiancée is really into fashion. I always thought it was really dumb. But, I learned there is a lot more going on there than I realized, and it's made me appreciate how the basic rejection is pretty snobby, too.

Idle thought: as a kid I used to think fashion was girly and lame. But as I get older I see it as something that can be as elevated and sublime as poetry. A lot of it is trash (same for poetry), but it is totally capable of being Real Art and in more profound ways than I realised

btw on the general topic of ruts & loops– often the conventional wisdom is something like, "turn away from it", but I think there's also a solution where you "lean into it". a sort of "churn it into butter" approach, really overdo it & be intense about it. gives a "done" feeling

Oh yea, I do like, too. Sometimes overdoing something helps me get detached in a way that makes the space feel very small. Although, the really cool ones are where it gets much bigger.
