Mostly, in the sense that, when a message is co-presented with a cue that enables stereotyping, people can use the latter for fast judgment rather than relying upon evaluation of the messages content.

Of course, the errors which accrue do great social damage. But, homophily lowers the perceived costs -- you're friends agree with you, so you get to maintain local cohesion.
