Hot take: It's not just about #openaccess. As a medium, journals are a bit threadbare. With all that's possible collaboratively given modern tech, they feel like a relic of a past institutional age — a solution to the credit assignment problem not a tool for knowledge discovery.

Unfortunately, no. But, to me, it seems as if technological affordances and institutional behaviors seem to have evolved at such wildly different timescales that they're no longer in the same reality.

I think for me, a huge part of what makes the disparity feel like a grotesque chasm is experience with
