You and I met at a time when I was...between belief systems. The books you prescribed me when I asked were Allan Johnson. And, they were good in that they let my intellectual brain grasp things it wanted to -- they helped change what I believed!
But, both then and now, I recognized they didn't move me. That came before -- asking was a symptom. Echoing what @JeremyHarvey said, I think the culture I consumed created the itch my rationalizing brain needed to scratch.
And, fiction is a great delivery mechanism!
