Iain M. Banks' Culture novels fit into our current historical moment really, really well.

How so? (I've ready about 6 maybe 7 books so you can assume a high degree of familiarity).

I can't articulate it well. I just think that his particular perspective as the author and what aspects he focuses on in his story telling have become...zeitgeist-y? (Of course, I'm just reading them now, so I could be reading/filling between his lines.)

To me, the books depict a very liberal culture. People can modify their bodies without judgement. Do any drug. Love whom they want. They are happy and tolerant. They are active and travel. They don't wallow getting steadily unhappier in virtual worlds like social media.

But I also think there's still that games on-top of games on-top of games (almost Baudrillardian) aspect of it that fits. That and the rule by thinking machines. And Contact, to do the liberal society's violence. Mostly, I really like his work and it confuses me.
