To me, the books depict a very liberal culture. People can modify their bodies without judgement. Do any drug. Love whom they want. They are happy and tolerant. They are active and travel. They don't wallow getting steadily unhappier in virtual worlds like social media.

But I also think there's still that games on-top of games on-top of games (almost Baudrillardian) aspect of it that fits. That and the rule by thinking machines. And Contact, to do the liberal society's violence. Mostly, I really like his work and it confuses me.
