A good desk fan (or box fan) and open windows will do wonders

That's the problem. The windows in this building are the dumb safety ones that open only about 3 inches and don't have removable stoppers. And the building is almost hermetically sealed. It was great during the campfire smoke time; now, not so much.

I just got a cast iron too!! I made steak and it was delicious but definitely smoky!

I don't think I've ever enjoyed the hardcore steak sear I get in my cast iron without a house full of smoke and watery eyes

Your heat may be a bit too high. Or you are using too much oil. It's effectively nonstick so unless you're frying chicken (or something with batter) don't overdo it.

Make sure the pan is hot before you cook and then cook on medium to medium high for a shorter period. Finish longer items in the oven.
