But the resulting obfuscation is intentional. Those factoids are thrown because they have an effect in the audience and keep them engaged as they artificially increase the perceived significance of whatever is happening. Retaining attention is the main goal.

It is. And to things people are attracted to (like baseball) it's mostly harmless. But when news commentators do it, they stretch attention too thin. "If your model predicts everything it predicts nothing"
