Where did the "economic anxiety" bullshit come from? I've seen plenty of leftists say inequality breeds fascism. I've seen a lot of liberals dismiss the idea by mocking "economic anxiety". But I've never seen anyone say "economic anxiety causes individuals to become fascist".
Was that the chronology? I still scare quote it because it always seems like a phrase exploited by conservatives and liberals to explain MAGA. And, I talk about inequality when speaking of the systemic disease. The referents are orthogonal in my head.https://twitter.com/generativist/status/1057279429343211521 …

Apparently, the "economic anxiety" crap came from Nate Silver. I dislike the term greatly, because it individualises what is actually a systemic and indirect cause. It's not the right object to focus on. If it were, why aren't black folk turning fascist in huge numbers?

Exponential inequality under capitalism does lead to fascism, but not bc poverty creates fascism. It's because parabolic inequality is a proxy for capitalism in collapse, so the ruling class & msm scapegoat weak others to divert anger from themselves, & sustain a failing system.

And they do that by exploiting prejudices already existing in culture. Against blacks, foreigners, the left, LGBT folk.. It's all shit within the cultural DNA of capitalist states, ready to be whipped up and drawn upon when all else has failed.
