P.S. @story645 since you're doing a data viz phd: what do you folks think of pgf/tikz?
I haven't really seen anyone use it for anything outside of drawing diagrams and trees in latex, so I don't know if/what the general opinion is.
Ah, okay -- thanks! I really like the grammar / semantics for some reason. (But, outside of stuff I've picked up by necessity, I have no formal data viz training/exposure.)
Hmm, it kinda reminds me of d3, which is kinda low level declarative
I like d3, but as @badnetworker once put it (IIRC): I feel like I have to relearn it every time I need it. For some reason, I feel like (but could be wrong) tikz is more intuitive. (Of course, you don't get the nice d3 transitions and data binding.)
I get -D3 made infinitely more sense to me once I read the paper explaining D3's design philosophy, a bunch of Viz theory & a great book on designing graphics systems that I haven't been able to find since. I wonder if it's that tikz follows latex conventions?
That all makes sense to me.
