One of my favorite programming experiences is:
- making a change that causes a test to fail;
- getting frustrated because you didn’t anticipate a failure;
- reading the test;
- thanking past you for guarding against a subtle regression.

<nod>, I built myself my own custom test runner framework before I ever tried pytest, and I like it quite a bit. And, of course, it doesn't work right with pytest, so gradual conversion isn't practical.
