I understand the impulse to sympathize with a student’s psychological woes during the course of a PhD but I think it’s important not to unwittingly imply such woes are *necessary* for success. It’s important for a mentor to respect when a student needs a break from the grind.

Agreed. But, I also think absent something like twitter or a good cohort or a friendly advisor, it's easy to not recognize how common and almost boring the feeling is.
