Well, they matter, but I find tweaking my libguide pages in the morning kind of like fiddling with houseplants. Pick a dead leaf here, add a weird pot sitter thingy there, do a little watering as needed. It's not quite zen, but at least it gets the brain a little more warmed up.

I write/improve scripts I use to automate various tasks over coffee.

That's my usual one. Write now I'm iterating on:https://github.com/jbn/itikz

Physically working out. Only way I can boot up without coffee. Otherwise, coffee and a "wake up the house" routine involving shades, plants, and a journaling routine.

I use the gym at lunch time to break up my mental work. (But, I get that most people can't do that given their jobs.)

I usually make an iterated to-do list. Start by listing all the things. Then iterate by ordering/prioritizing. Then make another one where you break the things into small tasks. Usually on lots of sticky notes. Usually the first few versions are low-risk/low-cost.

Also, make coffee (another iterative process).
