For example: if I anticipate that a paper is important [context], I read it s.l.o.w.l.y. by taking notes and writing down my thoughts and reactions *as I read* while also chasing down tangents when they arise [strategy]. It takes a long time. When I'm done, I grok it.

I read the intro and conclusion first. Methods if the paper is relevant to my field. Almost never read the abstract, it's not written for people who plan on reading the whole paper.

I write down questions as I'm reading the paper and look them up at the end, otherwise I'll spend too much time going off in bizarre tangents.

I do a lot of re-reading. Scan it for interest, assess; read the claims, assess; study the method, reconsider the claims, assess... Sometimes, it takes several days because I need to think about it in context of my own knowledge and expectations.
