Same! Except I spent late-college years and early post-college life as a libertarian. The devaluation wasn't subconscious, it was deliberate ego management and an output of my intellectual effort. "When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." Inequality begs the question: if they get less than they should and I get more what's implied by a proper balance?" Illusory superiority only gets you so far. The nagging fear compels defense.

It wasn't until
#phdlife -- motivated initially by "proving" the superiority of libertarianism -- that I started to see the fault-lines inherent to my beliefs. (And, to see my own guarded motives.) And, that only happened because I actually studied the things I disagreed with.1 reply 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread -
The incredible thing for hyperventilating
#StraightWhiteMale rationalists (counting 20's me as one) is that for all the bleating about wanting to know Truth, there are few better ways of doing so than gender studies or race studies.1 reply 3 retweets 4 likesShow this thread -
Society works in a way such that you don't even perceive their experiences. The rules are set up in a way that they're near-irrelevant to your outcomes so your ego-centric brain competently elides them as noise. It takes hard work to see more clearly.

Unfortunately, that work is inherently antagonistic to a self-image of superiority. It's far easier to watch youtube videos of so-called skeptics make fun of people in a way that aligns with your prejudices... ...while calling yourself enlightened.

(P.S. Shoutout to my friend @girlziplocked who recommended some good books that I absolutely fucking hated reading. It's weird that my marginalia in them no longer reflects me.)
