I’m away from my computer so can’t investigate this thoroughly, but if Paul fucking Erdős really didn’t grok the Monte Hall problem without a computer simulation, this story should be the page 0 of every computational social science text.pic.twitter.com/qG5Vd9BWtG

Yes! In fact, they’re proliferating! Here’s one from my committee chair: https://www.amazon.com/Introduction-Computational-Social-Science-Applications/dp/1447156609 …

Is the field about using computation to do social science research (e.g., computer simulations of social phenomena), or is it about studying the interaction of humans and computation? The linked book sounds like the former, but your tweet sounds like the latter.

More the former than the latter, but I have some CSS friends doing HCI work, and my work (on belief systems) intersects with computer-mediated communications. CSS has very fuzzy boundaries.

Have you written any pubs yet on beliefs? I’ve always been interested in how people gain confidence in the correctness of the software they are building. Once upon a time, that interest was in scientists building computational sims, today it’s about software eng like Netflix.

In a short two-to-four months, I'll have one better: my entire dissertation is a hierarchy of @ProjectJupyter notebooks and a few #Python packages in a @Docker container. (I gather you Netflix folks are quite big fans from the recent project visibility.)

I'm modeling beliefs with stereotypes as computationally cheap proxies for counterpart reliability. I want to show how easy it is for this combination to generate hard-to-reconcile differences in belief systems that emerges as group polarization, even absent any deception.

I argue that political science's emphasis on ideology is nonsensical (at least in mass politics.) It's just the narrative we construct to communicate what we believe. As such, we should focus more on the structure of information environments to minimize the bad integration errors
