When the top of your organizational hierarchy is literally described as the bridge to God, it does imply that the hierarchy itself is a bit too invested in its own importance.

I also agree with
@untravel that there's a huge historical weight behind the church's actions. In the European context, they were at one point an uber powerful organization and that history has not been forgotten. I'm not surprised by European popes continuing that attitude, but - 2 more replies
