I was raised Roman Catholic. I'm baptized; confirmed; and taught CCD in high school. I'm agnostic these days. Once I was into Dawkins et al. Now I think New Atheism is a cesspool, and religion is largely good. But, damn, the Catholic hierarchy seems inherently corrosive.

Of course, the Catholic Church, for a very long time, existed in an historical-cultural situation where secular law literally did not apply to it. My guess is the problem is not just structural but also historical, insofar as this tradition (clearly) remains influential.
