Science fiction fans: I want a BIG story. Galactic-scale, eons of history lurking in the story’s negative space. Mass Effect and the Hyperion series did this pretty well for me. What should I be reading, given this craving? (Say something other than Dune.)

I HATED Consider Phlebas. I was having fun for the first 2/3 and then by the end I was done with it. Worth revisiting?

I didn't like Phlebas or his final 2 culture books that much but imo all the others are super worth it. Excession in particular has the epic galactic scale, though Use of Weapons and Matter (epic fantasy as scifi with great set pieces, deliberate pace) might be my favorites.
