Is there a word I can use as a substitute for "they" when referring to the agents in my ABM? As much as possible, I like to maintain a clear boundary between mathematical abstractions and the people they (<- see!) are meant to simulate.

I don't understand why "they" is inappropriate. I don't think "they" implies humanity (or lack thereof).

I don't think it's inappropriate, I just want something that allows for a clearer boundary and more precise language. ...I'm not sure it exists though.

When in doubt, drop the pronoun? "The agents" could be fine, though cumbersome.

Yea, I have that in some places. It just sounds awful beacuse its so cumbersome.
