Is there a word I can use as a substitute for "they" when referring to the agents in my ABM? As much as possible, I like to maintain a clear boundary between mathematical abstractions and the people they (<- see!) are meant to simulate.

Like, in the same vein, I don't name my agents (e.g. Alice, Bob, and Carol) because they aren't good representations of people. At the absolute best, my simulation does a good job of representing a very specific aspect of human behavioral repertoire.

When in doubt, drop the pronoun? "The agents" could be fine, though cumbersome.

Yea, I have that in some places. It just sounds awful beacuse its so cumbersome.
