When reading a programming book, professionals tell you to "type out and play with each example." This helps you grok it. A lesser talked about side-effect is how it builds an index of that book in your brain. Years later, you know what page to turn to given a specific problem.

I have imagined this "type+play+execute" model built into ALL domains/topics/levels/types of learning, not just programming. Essentially, the learner is constructing an executable model of what they are learning. Maybe use UI like Scratch:pic.twitter.com/GcmJRHPELB

Yea. Simulating the process is like a prosthetic device for imagination. (Although, that' is very much not the expectation for most people.)

I believe there is a very deep connection between learning-by-generating process and the P vs NP problem in Computer Science. Understanding what I teacher/lecturer/author is saying is essentially a recognition problem = P Generating a "working system" = NP

For eons, the way teachers helped students develop "generative capabilities" was via quizzes, exercises, and tests. (Also "proof is left to the reader" in papers) Same is true with the "case method" of teaching management & social science.

Seems like an active "construction set" that is used by the student to build/test a working simulator *while* they are in the lecture or book or tutorial would be an exciting new development. Blend+merge "notes" with "exercises"

Yea. I've actually wanted something like that as an adjuvant to my SRS software. Especially for things like math, where you're brain quickly finds toe-holds that assist in recall, but not application.

Yet another project on which you and I should be collaborating.
