Hah! Both (I think). But, back then, I thought Scala was awesome because I'm too drawn to novelty and puzzle-style complexity. I wasn't building anything that needed a type system like that. So it was very bad evangelism.

I think at the time I really wanted to build agent-based models in Scala. Built some layers on MASON (GMU's ABM framework). Thought traits were a perfect fit. But, really, if you need that much complexity management in an ABM, the ABM is too complicated anyway.
