Half of half of the U.K. productivity puzzle has been solved - ONS were over-estimating hours of work and under-estimating holiday timehttps://www.ft.com/content/017a99aa-fc72-11e8-ac00-57a2a826423e …

We were taught maths at school once. What's this"half of half" business? Can't you understand "quarter" any more?

Fair point...what I mean is UK "productivity puzzle" has two parts (not exactly equally sized) - one puzzle is why UK productivity has persistently been lower than in other advanced economies, the other puzzle is why productivity growth has flat-lined over the past decade

This new research only helps explain (part of) the first puzzle

Isn't the "puzzle" usually a reference to the post-crisis UK productivity growth collapse, rather than the longstanding level gap relative to France?

That was what my second "half of" referred to. Lots of people are careful to distinguish the two puzzles about UK productivity - why it has persistently been lower than other countries and why it has grown so slowly since the crisis. This only helps with the first.

apologies Gemma - my tired brain could plainly not process the double "half of" - bit like the double "the" in this:pic.twitter.com/O2xcAPB7vY

Total rubbish. Working out of hours and remotely/on smart phones should be taken into consideration.

In theory it is - ppl are asked how many hours they actually work, not contracted hours.

The problem is that Brits don't like to moan and we generally don't talk about work that is done outside working hours. Sending a few e-mails in the evening while watching TV is not considered work by most. It adds up though.

But more hours put in with same output means lower productivity per hour.

Which is my point. The "new" way of looking at productivity is nonsense if only hour spent in the office are taken into consideration.

The massive increase in the bureaucratic burden over the past ten years never seems to get mentioned in these productivity studies.

So the mystery of the "lack of productivity" of British workers is being solved? It's yet another statistical glitch, from the ONS - an organisation that should be doing betterhttps://twitter.com/gemmatetlow/status/1072396077800787968?s=20 …

Every now and then I get the train home from Waterloo at 4pm. It's always rammo. Always used to make me wonder whether Londoners really work the long hours they were reputed to!

I get the 16.28 from Liverpool Street which is quite busy, but nowhere near as busy as the 06.01 I get in the morning to be at my desk before 7.00. We're just early birds, partly due to being an hour behind mainland Europe.
