I just went to Galician names. Now I'll explore the rest of the peninsula.

There's a city called León (lion) but the name comes from the Legion (Legio) that founded the city back during the Roman Empire. That's why people from there are called "Legionenses or Leoneses" but not "Leones" (lions).

There are many small towns that use "Castle", "Mill" and "Saint" in their names. In Castilla there are tons of small villages that combine names like: Thing of the Thing Random examples: - Paredes de Nava - Castroverde de Campos - Madrigal de las Altas Torres - Riomalo de abajo

Those four should go roughly as: - Walls of Nava - Greencastle of Fields - Madrigal of the High Towers (a madrigal is a musical composition) - Badriver from below

Now with names and surnames, starting with my own: Llamas. It comes from Lamas which are like the mold or slime that forms in river rocks and surfaces. BUT Llamas in Spanish means other things: - The plural of the llama animal - Flames - Second form of the verb "llamar" (To call)

So you can imagine how much fun kids had with my surname in school, like "Who are you calling to?" (A quién llamas?) or "Watch out, you're gonna burn!" (because of the flames)

Random common surnames in Spain that translated are more interesting: - Guerrero, Guerra, Cueva, Torres, Navarro, Paz, Rojas, Castillo, Cabezas, Carballo (this one is Galician, "Roble" in Spanish). - Warrior, War, Cove, Towers, From Navarra, Peace, Reds, Castle, Heads, Oak.
