Since I'm getting more EN-speaking followers lately, I'm gonna give you some funny facts about Spanish words and sayings, and how I realized how funny this language sounds when translated to English. Thread:

"Mono" has several meanings: - Monkey - Onesie, like the one that construction workers use - Cute

So yeah, you can say "Qué mono!" and mean "What a monkey!" or "How cute" at the same time. It all depends on the context.

Our famous Tortilla comes from "small torta". Torta means cake. So basically a tortilla is a small egg and potatoes cake. Cannot be unseen now.

"Ser un vinagres" (being a vinegars) means someone that is grumpy, dislikes and complains about everything. Also used: Avinagrado (vinegared....?)

Switching to cities and toponyms, it gets even better. - Normal stuff: My hometown is called Ourense, which comes from Auriensis. Apparently it was called like that by the Romans because there was a lot of gold in the river (not anymore, we checked).

- Weird stuff: There's a town called O Porriño, which now literally means "The little joint". Yes, as in weed joint. Originates from a man called Juan Porro who was famous during the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage in medieval times. Juan Porro is John Joint, basically.

More town names, some funny and some epic: - Arcade, Melón, Sandiás, Avión, Lobeira, Muiños, A Guarda, Muros, Ortigueira - Arcade, Melon, Watermelons, Airplane, Wolves' Lair, Mills, The Watch. Walls, Nettle area

One that I find very epic: Fisterra. Romans called it Finis Terrae since they thought that point was the end of the world. No wonder why:pic.twitter.com/jB2jAVNT09

I just went to Galician names. Now I'll explore the rest of the peninsula.

There's a city called León (lion) but the name comes from the Legion (Legio) that founded the city back during the Roman Empire. That's why people from there are called "Legionenses or Leoneses" but not "Leones" (lions).

There's a town next to Valencia called Torrent. I'm guessing there are a lot of downloads there.pic.twitter.com/gn0mPRkxoG

There are many small towns that use "Castle", "Mill" and "Saint" in their names. In Castilla there are tons of small villages that combine names like: Thing of the Thing Random examples: - Paredes de Nava - Castroverde de Campos - Madrigal de las Altas Torres - Riomalo de abajo
Show this thread -
Those four should go roughly as: - Walls of Nava - Greencastle of Fields - Madrigal of the High Towers (a madrigal is a musical composition) - Badriver from below

Now with names and surnames, starting with my own: Llamas. It comes from Lamas which are like the mold or slime that forms in river rocks and surfaces. BUT Llamas in Spanish means other things: - The plural of the llama animal - Flames - Second form of the verb "llamar" (To call)

So you can imagine how much fun kids had with my surname in school, like "Who are you calling to?" (A quién llamas?) or "Watch out, you're gonna burn!" (because of the flames)
