! Really excited to speak at the Fermilab Users Meeting about how scientific institutions can better support their #disabled students and faculty. Improving the environment for one #minority group improves the environment for all minorities. #science#stem
The very act of doing science is queer. It is specific and generalizable. It is an individual and a communal project. It is a rejection of the seduction of assumptions. Science begins with a question born out of imagination, of wonder.
It shouldn't be a knee-jerk reaction to every point of view we disagree with, otherwise, we run the risk of stifling constructive debate needed to move issues forward and reach solutions that work for everyone.
There is a particularly important point at the end. Blocking or capturing cancelling particular arguments should be seen as a last resort to protect against dangerous individuals and organizations.
This can happen in scientific fields as disparate as artificial intelligence, genetically modified crops and psychedelic medicine - representing some of the most challenging areas for science communication that I enjoy employing my skills in.
What if, as well as interacting with an audience that thinks science is not for them for various reasons, you also have you tackle the problem of people immediately jumping to negative conclusions halfway through the first sentence?
I enjoy overcoming the challenges that often prevent effective science communication and assisting fellow researchers to do the same. I have studied and worked to mitigate the points where science and its communication may not effectively reach various under-represented groups.
In the main, it was really well thought out. However, I found with a few more adaptations it could be made more accessible to two children with disabilities.

Instead, we should champion seeing issues from the other person's point of view to encourage constructive dialogue. This, backed up by thoughtful activism for social change where injustices occur or where the accepted thinking is out of step with established evidence.
#politics
To give an example yesterday I was with a friend who was praising a comic book about a queer character who went around murdering heterosexual people. This is not how we work towards a more unified and fairer society for everyone.
#society#culturewars
I'm really fed up with the culture wars, specifically how it drives a wedge between people. I've seen lifelong friends no longer talking because of disagreements about cultural and political issues. It's creating divisions and aggression in groups that weren't there before.
Our proven change process, rigorous research and design skills, innovative ideas platforms and our wider convening power combine to enable the us to deliver solutions for lasting change.

We champion curiosity, creativity and courage to inspire better ways of thinking and doing.
Something has got into me. I love science and my opinion was that sci-fi could do everything that all the other genres aim to do, but better and with added Science. Now I can't even look at a sci-fi novel and would rather read almost anything else. Perhaps this is just a phase.
We are looking for disabled physicists working as scientists and engineers to be role models for future generations. If this is you, we would very much like you to get in touch to discuss this exciting opportunity. Please contact Dr Claire Malone claire@lightyearfoundation.org

To live only for some future goal is shallow. Itโs the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top. Hereโs where things grow. But of course, without the top you canโt have any sides. Itโs the top that defines the sides.
