My 89 yo mother drove to the gas station to fill up her car- she had trouble with paying at the pump and went in and talked to the clerk. She was Day 8 of staying home, I told her she is back to Day 1. I had to be firm (almost mean) with her. Happens in the US, too.

I’ve found they don’t like to ask - so I’ve just been phoning & saying I’m off to the shops now - what do you need? Or I’m going shopping Tuesday, I’ll pick your things up....it’s taken away the awkwardness of them asking first

There’s only so much you can do. Folks in that generation HATE feeling like a burden and like they have no agency. It’s very hard.
