In a classic Liam move, I saw almost all of these except the #1 film.https://twitter.com/FlicksNZ/status/1159311183880450048 …

Intrigued to know whether there were any films not seen at all by the panel. It was a long list after all.

Yeah, quite a few. We saw around 80 overall, which is roughly half the programme.

      So, “best” then? Really?

A bit harsh? They're very upfront about their methodology and it's commonly assumed that "best" doesn't guarantee encyclopedic experience. (I assume you don't watch every series when providing your best of the month rec's for RNZ.)

Yes, harsh. I’ll hold my hand up there. 🖐 . And I’m taking a long hard look at my own use of the word “best”. In my own work I’m pretty clear, I hope, about what has been seen and not seen but I didn’t give the benefit here.

I mean, I definitely share some of yr reflexive backlash to the term, like when Indiewire publishes a "best of the decade" 6 months before the end of it. And also any best of fest list that doesn't include BACARAU and DEERSKIN is objectively wrong ;)

It probably wouldn’t have changed the voting at all but half the festival wasn’t seen and the list looks just like the lists we all made previewing the festival before we’d seen anything. I don’t know what the answer is so I’ll shut up now.

Half the fest is still, sadly, something like 40+ films closer than anyone else got to covering the fest in toto. (I think @geekboy73 gets second place with 30-some reviews, but I stand to be corrected.)
