Words that nobody but journalists use (an occasional series).....”a brace”......”Judy Steampunk scored a brace of tries for Carterton”....it means “two”....nope, no idea either why we journalists love it.

I think it can be an indeterminate but significant number - Pattrick had a brace of journalism awards - but when specific it means two.
