This is Australia’s climate barcode 1910-2017. The darkest blue is the coldest year, the darkest red the warmest. If there was no trend, the bars would be random. Source:

We are way closer to this deadline than it looks. If you were holding off on donating to the Slate, now would be a very effective time to do it. There are so many weird YC startups this year to get reviews on!

In case you’re wondering why the statue needed to come down — other than the obvious reason that it was a monument to treason — here is an excerpt from the speech given at its dedication in 1913

This is pretty amazing. Both GitHub and Shopify are huge, billion dollar companies running on the original apps made over a decade ago. And they now both on the latest Rails, helping to push the framework forward 🙏🌟👏

There were signs of a past civilisation, so the spaceship entered orbit. "Nobody lives here," a radioed voice said. "They outgrew us and left," said another. "We know all about them," a third added. "Ask us," the three said in unison. "Who are you?" "Alexa." "Cortana." "Siri."

Every once in awhile, upgrading Visual Studio Code breaks highlighting for an extension. Blowing out ~/.vscode and ~/.config/Code doesn't help on the affected machine, but other machines are fine. I wish I had any idea what was going on. There must be some hidden cache somewhere.

Tip: Instead of asking unfamiliar faces in your department "are you a student?" ask "what is your role, here?" This helps folks who haven't traditionally been the face of academia-- young professors, professors of color, female professors in mostly male departments --belong.

We got a Nintendo player with all the classic games a while ago and the kids have been playing. I just sat down to play some games with them for the first time. An awed hush descended over them and my 11YO whispered "why is mommy so good at this?"

Today I released Bloaty McBloatface 1.0. Bloaty is a size profiler for ELF and Mach-O binaries, with experimental WebAssembly support. Bloaty has improved immensely since I first announced it in 2016. I'm really excited about this release.
