🇰🇪LEST WE FORGET! Under Mr. Moi, Kenya was an island of political stability. A democracy in name only, the economy stagnated, corruption flourished. He detained, tortured & killed opponents, consolidated absolute power & stashed billions offshore. RIP

#6 We that grew up with Moi have a hard time with our memories. A benevolent father, a violent dictator, an elder statesman. We loved him, we feared him, whatever he was May he Rest In Peace.

#5 Uni was closed for 10 months I left for the US. After they re opened I heard few months later our student leader was bombed in his room, 3 doors away from my old room in the student hostel.

#4 In Uni during unrest, at 4am we were awakened by GSU a paramilitary unit. It was dark, they gave us 5 minutes to leave. Disoriented, scared we walked to Nairobi. They lined road w their helmets glistening in dark. Some students resisted, were beaten, girls were raped.

#3 It was only when I got to Kenya high and my teacher Ida Idinga (Raila Odinga’s wife) lived in compound. We begin to hear of Nyayo house, the arrests, the torture, the harassment and imprisonment of heroes like Wangari Mathai, Kenneth Matiba, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o .

#2 I was 10 and to my great excitement, dad was invited to welcome Moi to Kisumu, my parents took me. I got a new white dress with an embroidered caterpillar on the breast. I sat 3 rows from the front and got to see Moi in person. I had chips, a Fanta and it was the best day.

A thread #1 As a little girl I thought Moi like a deity. His picture was everywhere. We were told he was the father of our nation. Every day at school we drank free nyayo milk. We sang patriotic songs in mass choirs and lined with streets waving flags when he came to our town.

Sad to hear of the death of Mtukufu Rais Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi. His death evokes so many childhood memories. May he Rest In Peace.

I will never forget, one of the best nurses I ever worked with died of the demon that is addiction. We all watched big Pharma push these drugs that killed so many good people.

She was in throes of an almost fatal overdose. Long story short she was so angry with us for trying to help get her into rehab. She already had HEB, HIV from a used needle that killed her brother. I left the US two months later she was dead.

One day she did not show up to work, I did something I never did before. My instincts felt something was really wrong. Went to her house, she did not answer door. Had apartment management let us in, found her semi-unconscious. Pills strewn everywhere. Called an ambulance.

A thread #1 Years ago I was managing a rehab unit, my favorite nurse Didi (not real name) was so caring and good with patients till I noticed on her shift every prn drug was signed for. Every single Oxycontin and Percocet. We had a problem, started watching her every move.

In 2017 out of 1 million new immigrants obtaining permanent residence Nigeria accounted for just 13,900 or around 1.3% of all new immigrants less than tiny countries like Dominican Republic (57,000), Jamaica (20,000) and Haiti (21,000).

“I support Trump because he is protecting his country’s interest”. Nice. But what if what he’s doing hurts the interests of your own country and fellow Nigerians? Or has your love for him transformed you into an unidentified flying American object of zero significance?
