Found an oral history of Tomohiro Nishikado. Pretty lengthy, in Japanese, and it won't let me copy anything.
So I can't really read it. But I think he acknowledges that Kyuukyoku Harikiri Stadium, Akira, and Takeshi no Chousenjou were done outside the company. If I remember correctly, Nishikado was the head of Taito's consumer department. http://pubs.iir.hit-u.ac.jp/admin/ja/pdfs/file/2102 … (PDF)
Basically what I had to do was export the pdf as a series of JPEGs then convert them back into a PDF, then OCR that. Not the best solution, but it's worth doing because the resource is so good. We've already done a good portion of the Hideki Sato one.
There's a (much!) quicker way: "Print" the original PDF as a PDF file. That will remove the Security settings that prevent copy/paste, but will retain the OCR. I did that for the Hideki Sato interview without any problem.
