Statues are part of human history. We should learn lessons from history, no matter how unpleasant. The Guardian are encouraging childish behaviour, like throwing toys out of the pram.

Statues are just shaped piles of stone. There is no need to make a big hoo-haa about them. Don't like them? Just ignore them. It's not that anyone is forcing people to worship statues at a gunpoint or anything.
