People are driven by emotion. In this case fear led to rational behavior, for once. But we're not good at being afraid of too many things at once or staying afraid of one thing for too long.

We have no choice. We have to balance the risk with the collapse of the economy. Anyone who can’t see that we can’t keep this up is just stupid. There is NO MORE MONEY! I am on the verge of losing my business and then what??

That seems to be what happened with Y2K. However, Y2K wasn't something that could re-emerge in the fall where people were likely to use previous experience to say it would be no big deal.

yes, and … it’s more apt than. The y2k problem has a longer cycle, there are several y2k problems that are re-emerging soon that have been ignored since y2k. Combination of it was "no big deal" and "but it’s so far off"… because being doomed to repeat history or something. Sigh

Oh very much so. Will also be one of the biggest problems when efforts have to be repeated at a later time.
