Things I will miss about Miami: my friends, colleagues, and students. Things I will not miss: it taking a literal hour to drive 5.5 miles to the beach because there’s no public transit connection and everyone drives like a libertarian sociopath.

That’s a wrap on day one of our symposium, which was deeply invigorating, provocative, and, dare I say, hopeful! We’ve got a full day tomorrow as well, so there’s still plenty of time for you to all join in on the fun!!

ICYMI For , I tried to explain what’s been going on inside Russia since the war started. My goal was to convey that though repression is worse than ever, the culture of complicity is just as important for keeping the war going. A short thread!

Truly a match made in heaven: two people who fashion themselves as defenders of liberal democracy in style with absolutely zero substance

The June cover was designed and drawn by Bono, who told @JeffreyGoldberg that he sometimes redesigns and reimagines Atlantic covers on his iPad. “Like Anne, Bono is preoccupied with issues of freedom and dignity," Goldberg writes in an editor’s note. theatlantic.com/magazine/archi

I checked with someone who works at the LA Phil and they confirmed: 1) this happened 2) the orchestra did not stop playing 3) it was during Tchaikovsky's 5th

Though a proverb that circulated as early as the 1870s, Lenin is not known to have ever quoted it. His successor, Joseph Stalin, is instead often misattributed to the quote, loosely paraphrasing from a memoir written by one of Stalin’s secretaries, Boris Bazhanov. snopes.com/fact-check/sta… oxfordreference.com/display/10.109…

All 5 New College professors going up for tenure were denied today, despite approval from the college's faculty and previous administration. Every academic should be paying attention to what's happening there, now. Florida is very likely your future.

Some professional news: I’m thrilled to share that Laika and I will be moving to Madison, WI, where I’ll be starting as assistant professor of musicology at the University of Wisconsin in the fall! I’m sad to be leaving Miami friends but so excited for this adventure!

For anyone wondering, merit raises for faculty are expected to average around 2% this year. This money sure ain’t going to us.
