And here's a look at how effective it is when you finally do find the corner of Facebook where you can turn off parenting ads. Just came up in my feed. (And no, I have not been googling about adoption. I am miles away from anything but grieving.) cc

I am so sorry for your loss! I teach Mathematics, and I would like to use your tweet to remind future Data Scientists that Big Data has very real human costs. Would it be alright if I posted your letter on my door and/or used it in a future course on technology ethics?
-
Yes please

Thank you.

I’ll make sure all of my computer science students will see your letter.

Please also feel free to share this late 2014 post and its followup.https://meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2014/12/24/inadvertent-algorithmic-cruelty/ …

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss. And yes, I realized today I want absolutely nothing to do with the "year in review" videos FB is offering up now.
-
Thank you, GIllian. I’m so sorry about your son.
-
Eric, I can't help but think of my own reaction from 2016, the year my son Jude died. Rebecca was beautiful. Eric and Gillian and every other bereaved parent, I'm so sorry. I feel every bit of this and wish I could reach through and wrap my arms around you.pic.twitter.com/NgoqRbLcFE

Somehow I never replied to this, so I will now. Thank you, Jill. I’m so sorry about Jude. We don’t have hugs over IP yet, but at least we can hear you.

Hi Gillian — I’m writing a piece about those algorithms as we speak, is it okay if I embed this tweet?
-
Yes please. Anything to get them to fix it.
-
I'm so sorry and not trying to be that person but was it possible to delete the apps and clear histories? Or would that not have helped.
-
You're being that person.
-
I honestly think she means it from a truly interested and wanting to help point of view. If others go thru this she could say, “You’re right, I heard about that; it’s terrible. The person who experienced it said she tried XYZ and found (blank) helpful”.
-
I'm being that person but, but, this is what her Insta says. "I do a
#365project, use Instagram for accountability (science says it works!)" It's an unfortunate situation but we we know how all this tech works. -
I would say instead of asking her, try doing some of those searches on your end and deleting them and seeing what works and what doesn't. Then you wouldn't have to bother somebody who is heartbroken, but also could see the results firsthand
-
Also a valid suggestion.

I am so sorry for your loss and your painful experience with our products. We have a setting available that can block ads about some topics people may find painful - including parenting. It still needs improvement, but please know that we’re working on it & welcome your feedback.
-
Thank you for responding. Since I posted this, someone showed me where in my settings to turn off pregnancy/parenting ads. I tried to find it a few days ago, but it’s too confusing when you’re grieving. That’s why I was suggesting a keyword like “stillborn” triggering an ad break
