A scarcity mindset is one in which a person thinks there are limited opportunities, so you *must* do everything that comes your way to make a name for yourself, i.e. advice to always review when asked.

Other things said in a scarcity mindset revolve around doing enough work to propel yourself to the ‘top’, whatever the top may be.

Scarcity mindset may be inherited from our advisors, something we develop on our own by watching other people’s successes, or advice that trickles to us in the ether (i.e. that twitter thread). Each of these contributes to scarcity culture.

The idea that a successful career is built around any single recipe of ‘enough work’ is problematic, and based in cultural inertia. “Here is the recipe that has worked for me so it should work for you”

The other reason scarcity mindset is problematic is that it is based at its core on developing superiority to others. “I will do all this work and then advance more quickly to the ‘top’ compared to current persons or compared to the careers of people that came before me”.

There are two main reasons a superiority mindset is tricky - one is that often there will often be someone better or more skilled than you (i.e. comparison is the thief of joy), and another is that this is an external marker of success, rather than an internal one.

External markers of success -- e.g., awards, distinguished prof, list of top and best most awesome scientists.

No doubt that a scarcity and superiority mindset *can* get you these external markers of success. BUT. Relying mostly or solely on these things is also a recipe for disastrous relationships with others and yourself, and truly a recipe for burnout.

Ask yourself -- if I push myself mostly based on external (and predominant science culture) ideas of superiority, what happens to me mentally if I don’t hit the mark? Where am I then?

So......what’s the alternative to scarcity and superiority? The abundance mindset.
Prikaži ovu nit -
The abundance mindset is the one that recognizes many opportunities will come your way, and perhaps an opportunity that you have been offered would be better for one of your collaborators, or someone who you think does really great work.
Prikaži ovu nit -
The abundance mindset says ‘Hm, is that review something I need to do right now to be a good community member?’ ‘Do I need to produce 10 papers or can I focus on fewer solid papers?’ ‘While I’d like to do this work, I can see that so and so would be more appropriate for the job’
Prikaži ovu nit -
The abundance mindset is about choosing your work carefully, and recognizing the skills and abilities of others. It’s about being generous -- both with opportunity and with recognition. It is the mindset that allows for a healthy, productive atmosphere.

I haven’t always been successful dealing with issues related to scarcity culture, but lately I have been working more in an abundance mindset.

Going into the future, my personal goal is to shut out the messages we get wrt scarcity culture and superiority, and focus more on mastery of the work I choose to do. /fin

Addendum: I'm not sure who originally applied scarcity/abundance in organizational psychology, but if you are interested in more, I have been reading books by Adam Grant and Raj Raghunathan (w some Brene Brown thrown in there)
