  2. Researched 1st book at Found notes from Taliban 1st meeting w/ NGOs in '96 when group swept Kabul. Sought UN seat, issued rules: no high heels, mandated burqa, no laughing on street. No women out w/o male chaperone. Now comes 2021. Same discussions now lie up ahead.

  9. I think of women I interviewed in Kabul on life under Taliban in 1990s for my 1st book. And how different their view was from international men I met who worked with global NGOs, UN, etc. "They stole my future from me," a young woman said in our meeting. "They took my education."
