Researched 1st book at Found notes from Taliban 1st meeting w/ NGOs in '96 when group swept Kabul. Sought UN seat, issued rules: no high heels, mandated burqa, no laughing on street. No women out w/o male chaperone. Now comes 2021. Same discussions now lie up ahead.

I think of women I interviewed in Kabul on life under Taliban in 1990s for my 1st book. And how different their view was from international men I met who worked with global NGOs, UN, etc. "They stole my future from me," a young woman said in our meeting. "They took my education."

Being an Afghan journalist in Afghanistan is like writing a story about different fires in your house and report the burning of each part, despite your family members being stuck there and you can’t help them. Just in case if you don’t know how it feels.

Afghanistan is a nation filled with young people working to decipher their futures amid true fear. A country with young women & young men whose lives show that the quest for human dignity does not stop at the Afghan border. Thinking of them as they think through what to do next.

#Afghanistan: First sentence from woman activist in email received this morning: "The situation is deteriorating very quickly." Women who support women across the provinces are the front line in creating stability, security whatever comes. Their fight goes on no matter what.

Important that military translators who supported US in #Afghanistan receive #SIV visa. Also important to support women who translated for, worked in Embassy, USAID and others -- as well as women who helped US/NATO effort as aid partners. Women leaders who have risked so much.

IDPs in Kabul from Malistan-Ghazni. This pic shows a small tip of the huge iceberg. We can’t afford more killings, destruction & displacement. This war must stop & all players (Afghans+Regional & International Community) must play their role in stopping this war.
