I have treated 40,000 patients, and I have seen medicine change from a compassion-based profession into a corporate-greed driven industry.

I’m reminded again this past few weeks that the most important investment I can make is towards my family. The hospitals will bleed me dry. I can only invest into work from a place of overflow at home. They can always find another surgeon. My family can not find another me.

The outbreak highlights the critical role of infectious disease specialists. Yet very few docs want to specialize in ID. I wrote about the public health emergency no one is talking about:

About age 50 I cut back my practice/teaching hours to "Spend more time with family and for personal wellness." I can't tell you all the disapproval I got from colleagues in many specialties. Most were older, the same ones I saw dying early deaths from overwork. TAKE CARE OF YOU.

  7. The US HMO is unethical in its essence: Insurance corps. make more profit NOT paying doctors. Doctors make more profit NOT providing care for patients.

10: want to hear a joke? doctor: of course! 10: what's the difference between a virus and bacteria? doctor: I don't know, what? 10: then why should I trust you?

  12. Student, go FAR outside your comfort zone; I'd to do a research/thesis project in college. I met the Chaplain of the Hospital looking for an assistant. I was an agnostic, but said yes--Formed my passion now for the doctor-patient relationship and in medicine

  13. I went to see one of my specialty docs. He's a nice guy, we caught up on each others's health. I reminded him I'd had testicular CA 40 yrs ago. He said he'd had () cell skin CA >5 yrs ago. I looked him in the eye and said: "Today we're both CA survivors."

On I want to thank the surgical and medical oncologists who cured me of almost 40 years ago. They gave me the chance to treat many 1,000s of patients. They gave me the chance to enjoy a long life with my family.

Everyone, keep a "sunshine folder" holding letters of recommendation, awards, citations, letters from patients, etc. That way, when life beats you up, you can read them and know you have done so much good in this world.

We can legislate no more for-profit insurers for primary insurance, no more managed care, no more corporate medicine, no more HMOs, no more referrals or networks. That is US Original Medicare, same for WHO #1 quality France, UN #1 outcomes Japan.
