Can any historian point to a precedent in which a British government deliberately and knowingly made British people poorer? What will be the consequences for those politicians who vote for this? https://t.co/EZQTqwghwM

While I deplore the #Brexit ultras who lie with impunity & dismiss all concerns as scaremongering, I suspect history will judge ex-Remain MPs who facilitated this catastrophe by their paralysis & cowardice in a far harsher light.

Sadly, the leader of the opposition seems to advocate a similar course.

It does not seem that way... Corbyn is a rational man and always argues his point pretty candidly. You only have to listen: He would never seek to overturn a democratic vote. So his ‘6 tests’ are try to retain all of the benefits of EU without actually being in. /1

As far as I've read, any MP voting for this will be in direct breach of the ministerial code of conduct. I think we can all imagine the possible consequences if they ignore their duty and enable brexit.

I asked about something similar last year; has British gov ever knowingly acted against the national interest? No one offered an example. I think choosing to proceed with #Brexit is an unprecedented act. What will history make of this?

The abolition of the Corn Laws was only adverse for Farmers, Millers & Landowners. The others all benefited from cheaper bread &, more so, cake
