would likely need to be combined with some discovery mechanism: Every year the ratio of tax paid to taxable income was posted outside your home. Funny, we'd all still try to lower our taxable income.

I assume they'd publish both absolute amounts outside your home. And on your mandatory Twitter profile. As with many dystopian scenarios, it might work. I prefer if society collectively figures out what is fair, pay without guilt and - crucially - know cheaters are punished.

the power of public shaming and ostracization is underrated. then again, if people feel like you arent sharing enough, they may eventually just try to forcibly take it from you anyway.

People taking things from people will never go away. The only difference would be that no human would have the right to do so.

What if people had to write a check to the government every pay period instead of having taxes withheld from their paycheck? Would people care more about how the money was spent?
