I store Deconstruct videos with par2 error correction files to allow recovery from corruption. 2019's par2 file already fails verification, which means that either the videos or the par2 data itself have been silently corrupted. Reminder that the computer will destroy your data.

(This won't affect our ability to publish the videos. These are the multi-terabyte raw video files, not the edited ones.)

Worse: I don't know whether the video files are bad or the par2 files are bad. I'm going to throw a text file in there explaining the situation to my future self and just store it as-is. Fortunately, there are plenty of good recovery blocks left. par2 is amazing.

If you wonder why I'm still wrangling par2 data six months after the conference: it's taken a lot of iterations to be sure that this was really happening. It takes a week or more to generate the par2 and ~1 day to verify it. And as you can imagine, I don't sit there watching it!

Related reminder: Apple released a brand new file system in 2017, and it can't even *detect* corruption of user data because they didn't include any checksumming. They say that the disks take care of that. An Apple computer just silently corrupted my relatively small data set.

Among the talk videos that my OS/disk silently corrupted is @danluu's, which was about the many ways that file systems and disks corrupt our data silently. Text version: http://danluu.com/deconstruct-files/ …
