I often advise students to do something open source so they have a portfolio. When hiring, I really love having a body of work to study rather than trying to extrapolate from opaque credentials and undetailed transcripts.

So true. But it also applies to a career - how can a resume show breadth, capacity, potential? I know many PMs (for instance) who would be amazing applying their skills/learnings to different types of orgs than where they currently work.

... But many big orgs filter such folks out, wanting ppl who've been doing "exactly" their type of work previously. And b/c they "can" filter them, in that they get so many applicants... & then wonder yrs down the road why they don't have diversity of opinion/capacity in mgmt.

Enjoyed this talk! I'm a self-taught Unreal Engine 4 developer. I've come a long way in my five-year journey. I'm able to build multiplayer games, design internal tools and a bunch more.
I wonder if the term auto-didact will become more relevant in the next decade? Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
