I finally figured out what was bugging me about the whole "incel" nonsense. It's a perspective twist; the word "involuntary" does too much.

(This is probably intentional deception on the part of the people using the term.)

You're meant to think, "oh, this person didn't _choose_ to be celibate, they just haven't been able to find a mate" and sympathize.

But of course this view totally ignores the fact that sex is a two-party-consent activity.

And maybe these dudes are just awful people who nobody would voluntarily share bodily fluids with.

So the problem with the term is that, in emphasizing what the dudes didn't choose, it ignores the agency of those not volunteering intimacy.

I wish I could find the tweetstorm I saw yesterday where a reporter who watches the Incel movement points out that the misogyny in there is not just rampant, but deliberate and conscious.

These men feel not only entitled to women, but they reject women who show any interest in them, and openly acknowledge that they understand themselves to be so loathsome than any woman who shows kindness to them must be stupid / evil / desperate / unworthy of male attention.

The part that so many people seem to miss is that no bit of that was an accident.

Nope. Teaching people the difference between "coincident" and "accident" is a huge problem.

It's natural to want to find some outward commonality, some shared influnce that made them all adopt this insanity out of error or desperation... NO, THEY ARE VIRULENTLY TOXIC SHITHEADS WHO SAW IT ALL FOR WHAT IT WAS, BROUGHT A BUCKET AND SAID "YAY, MOAR PLZ!"

A lot pf our language understanding depends on prediction, that's why puns work, and this usage predicts a whole bunch of stuff in one tiny corner of the landscape. We're not supposed to look elsewhere.
