    I am the glue that holds language evolution together! On second thoughts, maybe I'm the crumbs that get caught between the cracks...

    The author network from with cliques and top "brokers" (people whose interests bridge cliques = highest betweenness centrality). Twomey, Okanoya, Whiten, Nettle, Trudgill are no surprises, but I didn't expect to come out on top! Makes sense, tho.

    In many ways this feels akin to grilling academics about the immediate practical application of their work. (Certainly something else I've encountered.) It always involves a very narrow idea of utility, but the people who do it get to imagine they're practising due diligence.

    I was once grilled as a grad student by another—very left-wing—student I'd just met about whether Welsh was "a luxury". I've also been reminded that people matter, not languages. There's a strange blind spot on the left about the importance of languages to people.

    I still think learning a not-very-widely-spoken language is a lot of effort for low reward. It does not follow that I hate Wales, the Welsh, the Welsh language or its speakers. I do not hate performative offence-takers, though I’ve muted a few. I do not even hate cottage cheese
