A taxonomy of moats. Still not happy with this, but I think it’s better than the last one. Thanks for all the input...Thoughts on this one welcome! pic.twitter.com/YE11sZ4HVF

OK. V4 (and last iteration on Twitter). Pretty happy with this except the leaves are overlapping and necessarily incomplete. Thank you for the help pic.twitter.com/8h0zg0Cp01

I like this a lot. Can we also think about the nature of establishing and maintaining each type? Like non-value creating moats are harder to establish, while value creating moats are harder to sustain?

Seems to me the greatest compounding over time comes from sustaining value creating moats, but capitalism makes that harder to do. While with non-value creating moats, the challenge is to erect the initial barrier.

Under the differentiation section, you might want to think about a very specific kind of network; the whole ecosystem and/or platform discussion.

What would be an example of moat built around implicit knowledge? Seems like a hard one to sustain..

not sure I agree. Technical knowhow that can’t be written down has to be transferred by hiring people, and if it’s diffuse in the organization it’s hard to hire enough

This taxonomy represents a set of assertions about what creates "value" *for consumers* that focuses on factors that can potentially create what Michael Porter calls "sustainable competitive advantage" and Warren Buffett calls a "moat." Presumably you are referring to net value.

Factors that may create a moat include supply side economies of scale, demand side economies of scale, brands, regulation, intellectual property and culture. Each factor may or may not create net value. I don't agree that demand side economies create value but supply side do not.

Couple more to consider - 1. Culture 2. Strategy? - Currently reading the book Good / Bad strategy and it talks about good strategy being a set of interconnected things that only work well together and hence hard to replicate
